If that sounds a little confusing and convoluted, stay with me for a second or two and I will connect the dots, for both of us.

One of the biggest marketing disasters as well as successes in the business world comes from 3M, the world renowned manufacturers of adhesives, who inadvertently become the owners of the post – it – notes product. The reality is, post – it- notes were a huge massive failure, at first.

The scientists at 3M had spent millions of dollars and years on research,  trying to come up with a new adhesive, a product that would stick two pieces of paper together, permanently,  what they got in stead, was an adhesive that did only half the job. What they ended up with was a new type of adhesive, one that would stick a piece of paper to an object, but only temporarily, not the result you want when the object was to have it stick permanently.

On the surface, this seemed to be a colossal failure.  What they wanted was a new adhesive, they wanted to stick two products together and they didn’t’ t want them to pull apart, that was what 3M was famous for, making things stick together , permanently.

You can imagine what the scientists and the marketers were thinking, we have just spent years and millions of dollars, and all we have ended up with, is a product that barely sticks to anything!

A funny thing started to happen around 3M, with this product that was a failure at sticking permanently to things, people in the offices were taking the failure, and using it in a new inventive way, not the way it was intended to be used, but in a way that made sense for what the new product did best, sticking to things long enough, but not too long.

Post-it-notes is one of the biggest sellers of all time for 3M, and it was considered a massive failure at first, until a few office workers showed that just because at first glance something is not what you may have been looking for, can turn out to be far more valuable in the end that you could of  possibly imagined.
