Power Living Life ListThanks to the recent movie out called the Bucket List, there is a movement of sorts with people writing up their own version of a Bucket List, BL. Just to set the record straight, I have been working with and establishing the Power Living life List, PLLL, since the mid 1980”s. The PLLL has been part of the Power Time Management Systems since its inception, also in the mid 1980”s.

A quick review of the evolution of the PLLL would be appropriate here. The Power Time Management System has been evolving for some 30 plus years, the PLLL has been part of that growth. I started giving seminars on time management as a result of my work with my own franchise organizations, as well as for my business consulting clients. The reason for specializing in time management was simple: regardless of what you are doing, or want to do, it all starts with how you invest and utilize your time.

As the PTMS was evolving, I felt that there was something that I was missing in the seminars and in the written material. Managing our time boils down to what seems to be two simple end results, determine what we do and when we do it. Part of this process was the famous, much maligned, (and unjustifiably) I might add, To Do List. The To Do List is an extremely effective, but by itself, limited tool. I knew there was something missing in how we were doing this step, the way we were deciding what to do and when to do it was missing a vital step, that step turned out to be the Power Living Life List.

Remembering that one of the key elements of a proper time management system was its ability to help us accurately determine what to do and when to do it, our current data was incomplete, thus, we were not as effective as we could of been, if we had more accurate data on which to base our decisions, ergo, the birth of the PLLL.

What was missing in our data was a complete picture of what we wanted to do and there fore an accurate picture of out inventory of time, what was or was not available to us to invest in new activities and tasks. When I look back and think how we/I could not seen the gaping whole in the whole process, it seems rather obvious, something about hindsight being 20/20.

As soon as I added the power living life list to the PTMS, things went much better for everyone. Using the PLLL, gave everyone a much more accurate as well as long term vision of heat they wanted to do, and what was going to be demanding time in the future. We could see the entire playing field now, and could make much more accurate and intelligent decisions based on the best possible information. This was a major breakthrough for the PTMS.

The major differences between what is referred to as a Bucket List, BL and our PLLL is this, a BL is something that is a one way street, where as a PLLL is a two way street, a major structural difference. A BL is a list of things you want to do before you kick the bucket, you put things on the list, and cross them off as you accomplish them, the hope is that you get to cross everything off the list, before you kick the bucket.

Our PLLL is meant to be an in box for the rest of our lives, we want to put things in the in box, but we also recognize that for the PLLL to do its entire job, it has to allow the flow of things in, as well as out, some what similar to a revolving door. One of the many vital functions your PLLL will perform for you is a stress release valve. It serves this function by being a storage facility for everything and anything, the PLLL is a stress release valve because it allows us to get the massive amount of things we have swirling around in our heads out of where they do us not good, into a space and a place where they start to do us some good, into our PLLL.

This is where the BL and the PLLL differ, once things get put on a BL, the only way they get off the list is by being accomplished, with the PLLL, they get put on the list, and there is a system that allows them to be taken off the list, re worked, addressed, and then they may get done, or they may be put back, waiting for a better time to try to get them back on the front burner, instead of the back burner, like the revolving door.

The reality is, that within your PLLL, you could very well have a smaller list, and that list could be your version of your very own BL. A proper time management system is not set up to be a rigid one way only process, but a set of ideas and possibilities that you weld and fit into your personal life style. To this end, make sure you have both a BL as well as a power living life list in your arsenal of things you will be using to help you navigate successfully through life.
